Problem to Solve

The dashboard was already existing when I joined BAFS and though it was functioning users were struggling to consume and access the data. The dashboard allowed for very limited interaction, made the user frustrated and unable to access key metrics overall hindering productivity. Some other problems we were facing… Poor integration with other systems, lack of customization, and data overload.

Given these concerns, the question raised was:
How can we give our internal / external clients an easy to digest / customize dashboard that makes complex data comprehensible at a glance.

User Journey/Flow Mapping

In this stage I focused on sketching out how multiple user perspectives will engage with the current dashboard view. We walked through their journeys from sign-in to the accomplishment of tasks such as retrieving data or producing reports. Since there already was an active version of this dashboard there were many users willing and able to give constructive feedback. This guaranteed a user-focused interface and aided in pinpointing potential challenges early on in the design phase.

The photo below showcases our user flow.

Stakeholders Validations

During the wireframing stage of the project, stakeholders actively joined calls and review sessions to evaluate various features. These stakeholders, specialists in client experience, data visualization, and reporting, leveraged their client relationships to help us reform the dashboard experience and ensure the best solution for our users. This process involved modifying states, removing and inserting widgets, adjusting widget sizes, repositioning elements within the dashboard's UI, and refining features such as the "Restore Profile View," widget operations, and data exportation.

We also incorporated usability testing using Maze.co during this stage, enabling us to validate our designs with real users and make data-driven improvements. The participation of each stakeholder was highly beneficial, as it facilitated thorough communication and collaboration throughout the process.

Some of the ideas of the MMP implemented

Customizable View

Giving clients the ability to create their own dashboard view opened doors for a more productive and personal experience.

Data Integration

By connecting the dashboard to the JasperSoft server we were able to provide unified and complete analytics in an easy / attainable visual.

Scalability

By putting all of these analytics in one place we improved our client's efficiency. We also opened up the space for them to evolve their dashboard as their business grows.

Drill-down feature

Stakeholders highlighted how this hover feature empowered them to make quick/effective decisions with detailed data insights at a glance.

Export Data Reports

Keeping records of commercial loans allowing clients to keep track of historical data.

Challenges & requirements

Challenges & requirements

Since we (Data visualization team member - Ashley Taylor and Design team member - Myself) were limited to using Jaspersoft for our data and analytics we ended up being unable to do everything we wanted visually with the dashboard. Some of the restrictions we had were with widget sizing, appearance, colors, and the type of files available for exportation.

This was frustrating for the whole team but challenged us to adapt and deliver a visually pleasing and user friendly product despite the restrictions.

Impact & Insights

The duration of this project gave me the opportunity to collaborate with the Data Visualization Team, which gave me a full perspective of how the widgets would work better and how we could achieve the design upgrade with the TIBCO Jaspersoft system! I also had the opportunity to experience a brief immersion in SQL with this project by analyzing the data behind every widget.

This project was challenging as it required me to work with many different teams some of which had no experience with UX design. However this resulted in a great opportunity to practice humility, clear communication and respect each coworker's expertise.

Next Steps

The goal is to eventually migrate to a different data source (other than Jaspersoft) in order to fulfil our initial ideas for the dashboard view. This would include more customization and security features, easier access to manage/distribute reports, and a more data driven visual. I know this will be helpful for the clients and create an overall better experience.

The Challenge

When I first started as a Product Designer at BAFS, my main responsibility was to improve the Company's Design System with a systematic organization through the system. This involved working on various aspects, such as: Refining in use components, strengthening building blocks with slot components, design tokens, auto layout, colors, typography, variables and simplifying templates.

Our goal as a Design Team was to follow the principles of Atomic Design before we started creating new layouts. This was all about making sure everything looked and worked the same way. Because we didn't have a lot of time and there was a lot to do with ongoing projects, with the Dev Team we decided to use an existing framework called Fomantic UI to set up the code foundation of the Design System. It was a smart choice because it gave us a good starting point. Once we got all the small details of the Design System figured out and had the structure of the pages set up, things got much easier. The different parts we created could be used everywhere in the system without any problems.
